Course Goals for GDES at VCU, Fall 2023:

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of graphic design principles through a combination of studio work and classroom instruction.

  • Gain practical skills and conceptual understanding through hands-on projects and theoretical knowledge.

  • Enhance students' ability to effectively ideate, research, execute, and present design projects by emphasizing problem definition.

  • Familiarize students with fundamental design practices by exploring materials, methods, and language.

  • Teach foundational principles using a disruptive and differentiated approach, covering design theory, typography, and problem-solving.

By the end of the course, students will have a solid understanding of graphic design fundamentals, enabling them to create purposeful and visually compelling designs. They will acquire the ability to think critically, solve design problems creatively, and effectively communicate their ideas visually. This course aims to prepare students for a successful career in graphic design by equipping them with a strong foundation in both practical skills and conceptual understanding.
